NewBridge Bank Wild King Classic Weekend is Family-Friendly Fare

September 15, 2011

Greensboro, N.C. — Anglers and fishing fans, it's time to get on board for the second annual NewBridge Bank Wild King Classic. This exciting competitive fishing tournament will be held Friday through Sunday, Sept. 23-25, at Wild Wing Cafe in Wilmington and Seapath Marina in Wrightsville Beach. NewBridge Bank is the title sponsor of this family-friendly, smaller-boat king mackerel tournament, which is in its second year of bringing area anglers together for a weekend of festivity and fun.

More than 100 fishing boats are expected at Wrightsville Beach for the Classic, with teams of anglers of all ages competing for $24,000 in cash and prizes. The tournament, which promotes offshore fishing as a family pastime, will feature special prizes for junior, lady, and senior anglers. The event also hosts both a catered Captains' Party and Awards Dinner for all anglers. In addition, the public can attend free king mackerel fishing clinics Wednesday and Thursday before the tournament and can view the anglers' catches at "weigh-ins."

It's not too late to register a fishing boat for the tournament. Registration continues until 9 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 23. Those interested can register in person Sept. 23 at Wild Wing Café, or in advance by calling Dane Waggett at 901-279-1990. Anglers can also register online at The website also contains more details about the event, such as rules and payout schedules.

Proceeds from the NewBridge Bank Wild King Classic will support the Cape Fear Community College Sea Devils Club, the backbone of support for CFCC athletics, which includes over 100 student athletes competing in six intercollegiate sports.

Mark Johnson, area executive of NewBridge Bank in Wilmington, is an avid fisherman in the local community and will be competing over the weekend aboard a boat under the NewBridge Bank banner.

"We're excited that NewBridge Bank is the title sponsor of its first Wild King Classic," Johnson said. "This is a great opportunity for the Bank to be involved in the Wrightsville Beach and Wilmington communities, promote a treasured coastal sporting activity, and help the community college's athletic programs."

Gary Hurley, a tournament co-director and the owner/publisher of Fisherman's Post Newspaper, thanked NewBridge Bank and other sponsors, such as Atlantic Marine, Bob King Buick & GMC, Tex's Tackle, and Intracoastal Angler, for helping generate excitement about the Classic in the fishing community.

"We are very grateful for all of our sponsors' support, including NewBridge Bank's, which lets us put on not just a tournament, but an 'event'," Hurley said. "We're offering fishing seminars and hosting some great celebrations with great food. We encourage a family atmosphere, and especially welcome junior anglers to participate. In fact, every junior angler that fishes in the tournament will get a Calcutta prize pack valued at over $50."

Hurley said he became involved in the tournament because of his love for the fishing community. It's a love he shares with his Wild King Classic partners, Mike Clark of Wild Wing Café and Dane Waggett, an angler and promoter. The three joined to revive the king-mackerel tournament, which had been discontinued in the Wrightsville area a few years ago.

"We decided to bring the tournament back; we thought the area deserved one," Hurley said.

The flagship event of the tournament, the competition, will take place Saturday and Sunday at Wrightsville Beach, with the weigh-in at Seapath Marina, located on Motts Channel. A "Captain's Choice" format allows anglers to choose to fish either Saturday or Sunday.

So, what size mackerels can anglers expect to hook?

"The average weight is 10 to 15 pounds," Hurley said. "I'd expect a 40-pound king to win."
